Chicago Bar Project “Bite”
While Emilio’s names itself after the way it serves its Spanish dishes, people come to Emilio’s primarily for one thing and one thing only: the paella. After discovering that I am no longer allergic to shellfish, I went straight to Emilio’s for their traditional Spanish paella with a memory firmly in my mind of missing out during a dinner party there almost a decade prior. There are three different types of paella: Paella a la Valenciana (traditional with
chicken, pork, langostinos, shrimp, mussels and clams in saffron rice), Paella a la Mariscos (same as above but only shellfish plus monkfish), and Paella Campesina (non-shellfish with vegetables). From my experience the Paella a la Valenciana is quite good and the Datiles con Tocino (dates wrapped in bacon with roasted red pepper butter sauce) or phenomenally good. While Emilio’s may have every restaurant in the city beat with paella, we still have to tip our cap to Cafe Ibirico for the best tapas in the city and Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba! is another good choice for tapas.
